Greek registration tax on a car from Germany

A 2021 Golf GTE with 110,000 km cleared through customs today pays €850 in registration tax and about €1,475–€2,025 in import costs overall. The tax is not based on what you pay: it is based on the car's Greek pre-tax price when new (€33,031), reduced for age and mileage. From 1 January 2027 the same car will pay €1,714.

Type it the way you would say it. We search the official price lists.

02Its details

Above 15,000 km a year lowers the tax slightly, by up to 10%.

Registered before 2021, so the NEDC figure from the COC counts, not the WLTP one on the German papers.

How the Greek registration tax is calculated

Every rule is in articles 136 and 142 of Law 5222/2025. The base is not the price you paid but the pre-tax price of the same car new in Greece, as the official importer filed it with customs.

The scale

Each band of the pre-tax price is taxed at its own rate. The bands apply to the price before depreciation.

€0 – €14,0004%
€14,000 – €17,00026%
€17,000 – €20,00053%

CO₂ emissions

The rates go down or up with CO₂. For cars first registered in the EU up to 31/12/2020 the NEDC figure counts, from 1/1/2021 the WLTP one.

Age and mileage

The price is reduced for age and body type from an AADE table: a 5-year-old hatchback counts at 61% off, a saloon at 72%. Mileage above 15,000 km a year takes a further 0.1% per 500 km, up to 10%. The total reduction never exceeds 95%.

Hybrids and electric cars

Electric cars pay no tax. Hybrids cleared by 31/12/2026 pay 50% (or 25% at up to 50 g/km). From 1/1/2027 every hybrid pays 50%, whatever its CO₂.

Environmental fee

Euro 4 cars pay an extra €3,000, Euro 5a and 5b €1,000. Euro 1 to 3 cannot be registered.

Questions

What is the ΛΤΠΦ?

The retail price before taxes: the same car new in Greece, without VAT or registration tax, including its equipment. It is the base of the tax, not the price you pay in Germany.

Do I pay VAT on a used car from Germany?

No, if at purchase it is over 6 months old and has over 6,000 km. If it is newer, 24% VAT is due in Greece.

Why does the amount change for hybrids in 2027?

Law 5313/2026 ends the 75% exemption for hybrids at up to 50 g/km from 1/1/2027, leaving a flat 50%. A plug-in cleared in January pays about twice what it would in December.

How much does transport from Germany cost?

By truck, usually €500 to €1,000 and 5 to 10 working days. Driving it needs export plates and insurance, about €80 to €130, plus fuel and tolls.

How long does it take?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks: transport, arrival declaration at customs, the special declaration and payment within 30 days, the ΚΤΕΟ test and plates.
